Once a service has been designed, it will be transitioned into the online "production" environment. A service may also be transitioned across versions, such as upgrades or downgrades. Transitions need to be carefully planned and managed to ensure smooth delivery and avoid any negative impact on running services, or the running version of the service being transitioned.
Service Transition practices should lead to an organisation developing and improving its capabilities for getting new and changed services into the live environment. The scope of Service Transition also includes the retirement of services and movement of services between providers, for example, during an outsourcing exercise.
